BENEDICT XVI AT THE ANGELUS: "CONTEMPLATING THE CROSS WITH THE EYES OF FAITH"

Entering "the time of Lent with one’s ‘eyes’ fixedly on Jesus’ chest": this is the suggestion offered to the devotees yesterday by the Pope before saying the Angelus. In the encyclical letter Deus caritas est – said Benedict XVI –, I wanted to highlight that only by looking at Jesus, dead on the Cross for us, can one get to know and contemplate this fundamental truth: God is love". And it is "from this glance" that "the Christian finds the way of his living and of his loving". "By contemplating the Cross with the eyes of faith – added the Pope –, we can deeply understand what sin is, how tragic its seriousness is, and at the same time how immeasurable the power of forgiveness and mercy of the Lord is". Hence the invitation, during this time of Lent, not to turn "the heart away from this mystery of deep humanity and high spirituality". In looking at Christ, "let’s feel looked at by Him. He who we have pierced ourselves with our sins – recalled Benedict XVI – never gets tired of pouring an inexhaustible flow of merciful love onto the world". And then he made a wish: "May humankind understand that only from this source can on draw the spiritual energy that is essential to build that peace and that happiness that every human being is endlessly pursuing".
