“We believe not only that there is legitimate scope for the Christian conscience in pluralist society, but also that all society benefits from the Christian conscience being able to express itself and offer its contribution”: it was said this morning in the Vatican by mgr. Elio Sgreccia, President of the Papal Pro-Life Academy, during the meeting for the presentation of the international congress "The Christian conscience in support of the right to life”, hosted by the Vatican from Friday 23rd to Saturday 24th February. Mgr. Sgreccia added that "the Church believes, as proven by its lessons and lately by the Encyclical ‘Fides et ratio’, that the Christian conscience, especially if consistently testified, corroborates reason and everybody’s life”. On the agenda of the international congress there are ethical subjects, much discussed lately in Italy and many countries across the world, such as conscientious objection against abortion, euthanasia, cloning. In this respect, mgr. Sgreccia underlined that "conscientious objection, if accompanied in everyone by the love of truth, is not a break from responsibility, but the opposite, it is the assumption of a testimony of help”.
