EUROPE: DIMAS (EU COMMISSION), "THE EU LOOKS BEYOND THE KYOTO PROTOCOL" (2)

” “Also on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol and in connection with the EU measures for the protection of the environment, Dimas insists on the need that "by 2020 the developed countries reduce their emissions by 30% from 1990". But "developing countries too must start containing the rise in their emissions". The goal set out by the EU Commission is to reduce the overheating of the planet to no more than 2°C above the temperature levels of the pre-industrial age". For the anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol, the Executive hosts in Brussels today a meeting of meteorologists and TV weather forecast presenters "within the awareness-raising campaign about what each one of us can do to contribute to the fight against climate change". About fifty meteorologists and TV presenters will meet in Brussels, at the Berlaymont palace; "as they are at the same time weather experts and famous faces in their own countries", states Dimas, they can "raise the public awareness" and "illustrate what everyone can do to contribute to reduce greenhouse gas emissions". Guests include: Marcus Wadsak and Andreas Jäger (Austria), Tatana Mikova (Czech Republic), Evelyne Dheliat (France), Dimitrios Ziakopoulos (Greece), Luca Mercalli (Italy), Inge Niedek and Maxi Biewer (Germany), Katarzyna Trzaskalska (Poland).” “
