EUROPE: REDING (EU COMMISSION), "THE EU INVESTS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY"

” “"I am proud of the great public and critical acclaim that the European film industry is receiving": Viviane Reding, in Berlin for the 57th International Film Festival, unveils the new EU program, Media 2007, which "offers to the film industry 755 million euros for the next seven years". Two thirds of the funds will be invested "to promote the distribution of European films" in the other states of the old continent and in the rest of the world. Media 2007 "provides easier access – specifies the media MEP – to funding and aims at increasing the use of digital technology, thus making our audiovisual industry more competitive". This is therefore a cultural investment for the EU Commission: "Digital technology is dramatically changing the way the film industry works. The keys to success lie in the use of such technology, in professional training, in the modernisation of cinemas, in the development of new distribution channels". The initiatives promoted by the Union include the training of scriptwriters, support to "fresh talents", access to the market, contributions to promotional events, aids to small- and medium-size companies.” “
