EUROPE: BOZKURT (EU PARLIAMENT), "TURKEY MUST DO MORE FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS"

"In spite of the progress made, Turkey has still much to do to guarantee women’s rights". Emine Bozkurt, Dutch Member of Parliament, has drawn up the report which is going to be debated today, in the afternoon, at the opening of the session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In accordance with the document, "respect for such rights is the essential condition for joining the European Union". The report makes known that the political framework in the Eurasian country, in relation to that subject, is "generally satisfactory", but at the same time, the report points out "its imperfect implementation". Therefore, Turkey is asked to "to accelerate the implementation of the new legislation concerning women’s rights, with the aim of ensuring that it keeps pace with what is expected by the Community acquis, and it is applied in an effective way". More precisely, one thing is deplored: "in a few areas in the South East of Turkey, little girls are not registered at birth". This prevents “to oppose forced marriage and crimes of honour". The text by Bozkurt insists upon the urgency of putting an end to violence over women. It asks for "pink quotas" in politics, and launches an appeal to education institutions for a real emancipation of women. Alarm bells are also ringing in the polygamy field.” ” ” “
