EUROPE: THE EU’S WEB PORTAL TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS’ HEALTH

"2007 in the light of health": it is this slogan of a series of initiatives which the 27 member states are preparing for defence of human health. Apart from the specific initiatives already started, for instance, against passive smoking and obesity, the European Union has been providing a portal (http://ec.europa.eu/health-eu) translated into 14 languages, up to now. It was carried out by the Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection of the European Commission, and it "is the sole point of reference for the European citizens who wish to know the most recent novelties in a wide range of health subjects in their countries, and in the whole community territory". The Web instrument "was conceived for those who are interested in health, as well as for health operators, scientists and the main subjects in the political world". Among its objectives, we must point out the intention "to give the citizens useful and quick and access to understandable information concerning initiatives and programmes on a European level, in the fields of public health". The portal, including links for the main international and non-governmental organizations, as well as for the main novelties in the field, also intends to demonstrate that electronic health (e-Health) can be a reason for union for the European citizens in the modern society".
