BENEDICT XVI: MESSAGE FOR THE SOCIAL COMMUNICATION DAY; "VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA IS PERVERSION"

” “"Every tendency to produce programs – including cartoons and videogames – that, in the name of entertainment, extol violence, reflect antisocial behaviours or make human sexuality look vulgar, is perversion, much more so when such programs are targeted to children and teenagers". This is the warning made to the media by the Pope, in his message for the World Social Communication Day. "How to explain – he wonders – such entertainment to the myriad innocent young people who are in fact victims of violence, exploitation and abuse?" Even if "many media operators want to do the right thing", states the Pope, "those who work in this industry are under psychological pressure and face special ethical dilemmas where commercial competitiveness sometimes forces the communicators to lower their standards". "Today the parish churches and the syllabi should be in the cutting edge in terms of media education", wishes the Pope, who recalls that the Church "wants to share a view in which human dignity is at the centre of every good communication" and "approves of the opportunity of offering assistance to families, teachers, communicators and young people". ” “
