This has been written by the Pope in his message for the 41st World Social Communication Day, due to fall on 20th May, about "Children and mass media: an educational challenge". According to Benedict XVI, "the complex challenges that contemporary education has to face are often related to the widespread influence of the media in our world". Because of the fast globalisation and the "quick development of technology", the media "powerfully define the cultural ambience", so much that "some people state the educational influence of the media competes with that of the school, the Church and perhaps even that of the family". Hence the need to "teach children to make selective use of the media" as a "responsibility of the parents, the Church and the school": "extremely important" is above all "the role of the family" who "have the right and the duty to ensure a cautious use of the media".” “
