WYD SIDNEY 2008: THE MEANING OF SEXUALITY AT THE CENTRE OF THE PREPARATORY COURSE

The subject of sexuality is at the centre of the January issue of "e-pilgrimage", the newsletter of the Organising Committee of the World Youth Day of Sidney 2008, guided by the bishop, mgr. Anthony Fisher. "In today’s world – writes the bishop, who is the author of the leading article –, the importance of sex is often overrated, as if one could not be happy without having sex, or it is debased, made trivial and commonplace, as if sex were like any other human function". "We are perfectly aware – he goes on – that the body, sexuality and fertility are precious and important assets, through which one expresses the nobler aspects of human relations, which however can also be used to hurt or exploit". To channel the reflection of the youth on the subject and their preparation in the run-up up the WYD of Sidney, the newsletter offers some of John Paul II’s lessons about the gift and meaning of sexuality that he had held at the start of his pontificate. In addition, the January issue of "e-pilgrimage" presents physical love as it is shown in the Catholic tradition: "from the Bible’s Song of Songs to Benedict XVI’s encyclical ‘God is love’, then an introduction to Luigi and Maria Beltrame Quattrocchi, the first modern beatified couple".
