SIR EUROPA: POETTERING (EU PARLIAMENT) ABOUT THE EU SUMMIT, "THE NEW TREATY WILL INCREASE DEMOCRACY". SPECIAL SESSION IN BRUSSELS TOMORROW

"The new treaty will significantly increase the role of the European Parliament and will thus increase democracy within the EU. Despite all the problems, the member states have given proof of their political determination in jointly tackling the challenges of the future of Europe". Hans-Gert Poettering, president of the EU Parliament, comments the outcome of the summit of June 21st and 22nd in the run-up to the special Parliament session that has been convened for tomorrow in Brussels, just to discuss the outcome of the meeting of the heads of state and government. In front of the participants in the summit, Poettering had asked for a high-profile agreement so as to continue the EU integration process. Tomorrow afternoon, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor and current president of the EU, will be there to report on the content of the "Conclusions" of the chairmanship and the mandate entrusted to the Intergovernmental Conference that in the second half of the year will have to rewrite the "revised treaty".
