BENEDICT XVI: TO CARITAS DELEGATES, "FACING GREAT CHALLENGES BY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE REAL NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE"

"The great challenges which the world has to face today, such as globalization, violated human rights and unfair social structures, cannot be faced and overcome if they don’t focus on the deepest needs of the human person: promotion of human dignity, wellness and, eventually, eternal salvation", said Benedict XVI today, while he spoke to over 300 delegates meeting in the Vatican on the occasion of the 18th General Assembly of Caritas Internationalis (3-9 June). The Pope thanked Caritas operators for their work and their testimony, recalling how they are "asked to participate in the mission of the Church to spread God’s love throughout the world, during the charity activities they are carrying out". "In the work of charity organizations like yours – he said, – we can see the fruits of God’s love". This theological vision, he pointed out, has a few "practical implications". The Pope illustrated two of them, in particular: "Every charity act – this is the first implication – should be inspired by a personal faith experience, towards the discovery that God is love. The Caritas operator is asked to witness this love throughout the world". (To be continued)
