The environment, international trade, the fight against terrorism and the development of Africa: these are some of the items on which José Manuel Barroso, president of the EU Commission, encourages discussions with the participants in the G8 which will take place from 6th to 8th June in Heiligendamm, Germany. The Portuguese politicians makes "an appeal, that the G8 may commit itself to take new, urgent measures to fight climate change", to be "also extended to the economies of the developing countries" (delegates from China, India, Brazil, South-Africa and Mexico will also take part in the summit of the eight "great" ones). In addition, Barroso "rejoices at the fact the G8 will place emphasis on the problems of development", wishing "Europe and the rest of the world may keep their promises with Africa" as to economic growth, the fight against poverty, humanitarian aids, the fight against Aids, tuberculosis and malaria. Barroso himself, along with the EU president on duty, Angela Merkel, and the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Javier Solana, is in Berlin today to take part in the EU-Canada Summit, with Canada being represented by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The agenda includes bilateral economic relations, "the global challenges, including climate and energy" and major international political problems.
