SCOUTING, 100 YEARS: ORTHODOX YOUTH WILL ALSO TAKE PART IN WORLD JAMBOREE IN HYLANDS PARK

There will also be Orthodox youth at the 21st World Jamboree, taking place from July 27th to August 8th in Hylands Park, in England, for 100 scouting years. It was announced by bishop Athénagoras of Sinop, auxiliary of the Metropolitan of Belgium (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople), and one time he himself scout and head scout. "What have the Orthodox Church and scouting got in common? For me – admitted the bishop, – both of them represent a red thread in my life: Orthodoxy in relation to spiritual aspirations, and scouting in relation to social aspirations". The bishop recalls that, in 1997, a world association of Orthodox scouts was established. It is called Desmos, which means "link", and its purpose is to promote scouting among the young Orthodox Christians. Today, scouting of Orthodox nature is widespread in Middle East countries – Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon – in the ones with Orthodox traditions in the Balkans, in Russia and within the Orthodox diaspora. "Scouting – added the bishop – shapes boys and girls in the service of God and the neighbour". Therefore, it was not by chance – said Athénagoras – that "lots of scouts were asked to serve the Church as deacons, priests and bishops. We also saw old scouts becoming Orthodox primates and patriarchs".
