SCOUTS: 5,000 WALKING IN THE CARPATHIANS TO WITNESS THE CHRISTIAN ROOTS OF EUROPE

"Surgite eamus" (get up and let’s go) is the slogan of Euromoot, the meeting promoted by the Union of European Guides and Scouts (UIGSE), presented today in Rome. The meeting will include 5000 boys and girls coming from France, Romania, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany. The event, which is part of the programme of the celebrations set up by the Union itself for the centenary of scouting, is taking place on the Tatra Mountains (Carpathians), between Slovakia and Poland, from 4 to 11 August. "It is a mobile camp on eleven routes, all of them starting from Levoca, in Slovakia, towards the townlet of Olsztyn, and from there, night walk up to the Marian Sanctuary of Czestochowa. "We chose the Tatra Mountains because, from the historical point of view, they have represented a link between Western and Eastern Europe: Catholics and Protestants on one side, Orthodox and Catholics with Oriental rite on the other side – explained Jacques Mougenot, Federal Commissioner of UIGSE. – The objective is letting our scouts live the Christian Europe, its history and its values". "We want to witness the Christian roots of Europe – said Father Cyril Vasil, federal assistant of UISGE – starting over from the experiences and the knowledge of Saint Benedict, Sts. Cyril and Metodius, and the other protectors of Europe".
