FORUM ON MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT: "IMPROVING MIGRATION POLICIES TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE MILLENNIUM"(2)

The governments agreed that "migration must not become an alternative option to the domestic development strategies of the donor countries for the developing countries". During the Social Forum which took place on 9 July, with delegates from about 200 organisations from all over the world, an appeal was made to ratify the "International Convention on the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their family members", adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1990 and enforced in 2003. So far, just 37 governments ratified the deed, all from the south of the world. The list of signatories does not include any EU country. The second International Forum on Migration and Development will be held in 2008 in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
