FORUM ON MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT: "IMPROVING MIGRATION POLICIES TO ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE MILLENNIUM"

"Now we have a better understanding of the way migration policies can contribute to development and to the achievement of the Objectives of the Millennium. We recognise migration as an opportunity, not as a threat": this is the conclusion drawn by the about 800 governmental and non-governmental delegates from 155 countries, that from 9 to 11 July took part in the first Global Forum on migration and development in Brussels. During the conference, the prime minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, asked the governments to "fulfil their obligation to allocate 0.7 of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to cooperation for development and to promote micro-credit", stating that nowadays Europe and the United States spend more for controlling migration that for initiatives for the development of the countries where migrants come from. "Let’s be honest – said Verhofstadt –. This strategy does not work. Actually, it is selfish and inhuman". During the Global Forum, several countries announced they will launch plans and initiatives, such as possible cooperation projects for the training of doctors and nurses, reducing the costs of immigrants’ remittance, improving financial information for immigrants and their families, developing a system to inform them about the risks and benefits of their migration plans before they leave their countries, promoting the use of new technology.
