HOLY SEE: STATEMENT FROM THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH, CARD. KASPER, "CONTINUE A SERENE DIALOGUE"

"The Statement of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, ‘Answers to questions on some aspects of the Doctrine on the Church’ (published yesterday, editor’s note), sparked off some reactions on the spur of the moment among the Protestant Christians", but "a more serene second reading will show that the Document does not say anything new, but briefly expresses and explains the position that the Catholic Church has always taken". This was stated by card. Walter Kasper, president of the Papal Council for the Promotion of the Unity of Christians, in a statement in German he gave to the Vatican Radio Station. According to the cardinal, "this is nothing new, so there is no objective reason to be outraged or to feel ill-treated". In fact, explained card. Kasper, "every dialogue requires clarity on each party’s position. In this respect, it was just Protestant partners who had recently asked for a clear-cut ecumenism". Then, if "this Statement expresses and states the Catholic profile, i.e. the profile that, from the Catholic standpoint, unfortunately still separates us, this does not hamper dialogue but actually promotes it".
