SIR EUROPE: COUNCIL OF EUROPE, AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKEY

An international symposium on the European regulations of human rights is opening today in Ankara (until tomorrow). It is an international symposium on the European regulations of human rights, and their application in Turkey. The symposium is promoted by the Council of Europe (COE), together with the delegation of the European Commission in Turkey, and the presidency of human rights in Turkey. Turkish and international experts will discuss the recent reforms relating to human rights, and their application in the country aspiring to become part of the EU. The symposium is part of a bigger project concerning the application of human rights in Turkey, financed by the European Commission by means of four million euros, and carried out by the COE. The objective of the programme, which should end in November 2007, is putting Turkish citizens in the condition to enjoy human rights in the same way as they are established by the European Convention on Human Rights, which Turkey joined in 1954. Among the activities launched by the programme, there is also the training of 450 judges, 2250 governors, officers, policemen and members of the various police forces. At the same time, the strengthening of the competences was financed. The subjects in question are 180 executives of the inspectorate of the Ministry of Justice, and 931 Councils of Human rights, scattered in the country.
