SIR EUROPA: CARD. ERDO (PRESIDENT CCEE)

"A very friendly exchange to adjust and strengthen cooperation between Ccee and Comece". Card. Peter Erdö, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and president of Ccee (Council of the European Bishops Conferences), comments the meeting held in Berlin last week between the president of Ccee and the president of Comece. "We are not thinking of any major change – explains card. Erdö in an interview with SIR -; however, this issue will be on the agenda again at our next general meeting (Fatima, 4-7 October 2007), which will also be attended by the president of Comece, mgr. Adianus Van Luyn, and the secretary general, mgr. Noël Treanor". About the possibility of a simplified treaty for the European Union, the president of Ccee says: "Unfortunately I hear no authoritative voice being raised on the part of the EU leaders for including the name of God or the Christian roots in the text. The Church would certainly like this type of acknowledgement, which is indisputable in the European culture, but, since we have to be realistic about the matter, what I wish for is that it will be people’s life that will reflect this heritage. Only a true, consistent testimony may have repercussions in terms of the establishment of the Christian values in public life". (continued)
