SIR EUROPA: EU PARLIAMENT, SUPPORT TO "ORGANIC" CROPS AND NO TO GMOs

Organic farming "is fully in tune with the sustainable development targets established by the EU", "produces healthy, quality products and uses environmentally-sustainable farming methods". The EU Parliament looks favourably on natural farming methods and opposes to the use of genetically-modified organisms, by adopting (611 for, 61 against, 23 abstentions) the report by the French MEP Marie-Hélène Aubert, covering a number of amendments to the regulations on organic products. In particular, the Assembly asks the EU Commission and the EU Council to pass a stricter legislation on such crops to avoid contaminations from GMOs, the "accidental" and "unavoidable" presence of which should not exceed 0.1%. In addition, the report asks for more attention to be paid to the local crops, "the indication of the place of origin on the label and stricter control". The report states that the legislation should provide "a basis to develop organic farming" and "lay down targets, principles and rules for all the farming, processing and marketing stages and methods" for such products, as well as indicating the "organic" origin of the products in advertisements.
