BENEDICT XVI AT REGINA CAELI: THE MEDIA "SHOULD RESPECT THE TRUTH". THINKING OF BRAZIL (2)

From this perspective, went on Benedict XVI, "appropriate training in a proper use of the media is essential: the families, the teachers and the church community are called to join forces and train children to be selective and take a critical attitude, by cultivating a taste for what is aesthetically and morally good". But, warned the Pope, "the media too must make their contribution to this educational effort, by promoting the dignity of the human being, marriage and the family, the achievements and the targets of civilisation". For this reason, "programs that instil violence and antisocial behaviours or that cheapen human sexuality are unacceptable, even less if offered to children". Hence "the appeal to the media industry and social communication operators, to protect the common good, respect the truth and safeguard the dignity of the person and the family". Finally, the Holy Father, with reference to the celebration of the Lord’s Ascension, that the liturgy celebrated last Thursday but which has been officiated yesterday in some countries, invited the people to collect their thoughts "in prayer to invoke the effusion of the Spirit, in spiritual union with the Virgin", whose "intercession will hopefully obtain a new Pentecost for all of the Church".
