EUROPE: VAN LUYN (COMECE), "ATMOSPHERE OF DIALOGUE BETWEEN EU AND RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES"

Continuation of the constitutional procedure, defence of fundamental rights and tolerance, widening process, economic and social development: those were some of the issues tackled during the meeting of the representatives of the European Union and about twenty Christian, Hebrew and Islamic religious leaders, which took place in Brussels yesterday. It was the first appointment in the presence of the current president of the European Union Council and the president of the European Parliament, as well as the president of the Commission. "We noticed a positive atmosphere, encouraging dialogue, and of mutual attention", said Msgr. Adrianus van Luyn, president of COMECE, to SIR. "Certainly, the subject of human right defence was pointed out several times – said the bishop of Rotterdam. – I myself recalled that human dignity must be in the first place. In the same way, the subjects of respect for life, from conception to natural death, and support for the poorest countries are confirmed". Van Luyn hopes for "more numerous moments of this kind", which "are essential for a constant and frank relationship between the European Union and the religious communities that are present in Europe".
