One billion refugees by 2050. One seventh of the world population forced to leave their countries, due to climate change, that will reduce water and crops, which in turn will lead to local wars breaking out for access to resources: this is the apocalyptic scenario outlined by a report by Christian Aid, a Christian organisation based in the United Kingdom and Ireland, called “Human tide, the real migration crisis”. "Unless effective countermeasures are immediately taken”, says the report, published today, “climate change will created at least one billion refugees all over the planet by 2050”. 163 billion people have already been forced to leave their countries and take the status of refugees. But in just over four decades this number could increase tenfold: another 50 million refugees will have been created by conflicts and breaches of human rights, 250 million by floods, drought and hunger, 645 million by such projects as dams, deforestation and big industrial ventures. According to Christian Aid, it is the industrialised countries that are mostly responsible for climate change, so the onus is on them to pay the costs to help the most affected populations as well as launch initiatives to ward off this tragedy.
