The "Europe-Day in Schools" involves 50 regions in the Union, amounting to 97 thousand students from over 4 thousand classes. "To help students and teachers to set up meetings and to prepare debates explained the promoters, – the Commission sent every school some information materials about the EU’s development cooperation". Moreover, to celebrate the fiftieth year of the EEC Treaty, a publication entitled "50 years – 50 stories of solidarity" will be distributed. It "illustrates fifty concrete projects carried out all over the world thanks to the European Union". In this sense, the commissioner for development and humane aid, Louis Michel, said: "The EU plays a fundamental role in the elimination of poverty". Therefore, following this direction, "we must join our efforts and defend the values of European solidarity". The Day in schools "is a great opportunity to discuss this subject, and to approach the EU to its youngest citizens". Apart from a few demonstrations scheduled in several towns, seats of European agencies and institutions, the official ceremony for the EU Feast is scheduled in the hemicycle of the EU Parliament in Brussels today, in the afternoon, in the presence of about ten Nobel Prizes, with an allocution by President Hans-Gert Poettering.
