THE FEAST OF EUROPE: FERRERO-WALDNER (COMMISSION), "THE EU IS A GREAT CHANCE FOR THE YOUNG"” “” “

"Europe is a great chance for you, the young generations of the 27 member States. You are the ones who can enjoy the greatest opportunities in this Europe with no borders, where you can travel with no passport, and study in any country, and in which you have all the opportunities to build up your future of prosperity". With a message meant for the young of the Old Continent, the commissioner for external relations and neighbourhood policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, opens the celebration of the current Feast of Europe. As usual, in the last few days, the community institutions opened the doors to citizens through guided tours, stands, debates on community integration. This year, two events are emphasized: the anniversary on May 9th (the Schuman declaration in 1950, which led to the establishment of ECSC), and the fiftieth year from the signature of the treaties establishing the EEC. However, in particular, the Commission insists on the initiative: "Europe-Day in Schools", set up in collaboration with European regions: one hundred officers of the Executive will go to the secondary schools of the 27 member states "to sensitize the young on the actions carried out by the EU all over the world". The purpose is "to stimulate debate on the values which are the foundations of European solidarity". (To be continued)
