THE FEAST OF EUROPE: IN THE RUN-UP TO MAY 9TH, "INFORMING THE CITIZENS OF THE BUILDING OF EUROPE"

"Informing the citizens of the operation of the building of Europe and the activities that affect our everyday life". This is the goal of the initiatives promoted by the EU in the run-up to May 9th, the Feast of Europe. A feast that celebrates May 9th 1950 when the then French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman pronounced the "Declaration" that set up the Ceca first, then the EEC, then the EU. About 30 thousand people took part, yesterday, in the "open" day at Strasbourg Parliament: an occasion that will be repeated on Saturday 5th May in the Brussels premises. The slogan this year is "Together since 1957". The institution will be open to the public all day, with booths and debates. Over 100 thousand visitors are expected to go – according to the press office of rue Wiertz. In Italy it will be celebrated on May 7th with the "Concert of Europe" in Livorno, which will be broadcasted by RaiUno on May 12th. The president of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, will be at Milan’s Palazzo Reale on May 8th for the International Forum on "Economy and open society" with the Prime Minister of Italy, Romano Prodi.
