EUROPE: REDING (EU COMMISSION), "THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE EU IS AT STAKE IN TELECOMMUNICATION"

Prices are decreasing to the benefit of the consumers but the market is not fully competitive yet. The EU Executive submitted in Brussels today, through the MEP Viviane Reding, the twelfth report on the telecommunication markets. "For consumers and providers to make the most of the advantages offered by the internal market – reads the note –, we need more competitiveness, a more consistent, faster enforcement of corrective measures, and more independence from the watchdog authorities". The person responsible stated: "The opening of the telecommunication markets to competition is certainly one of the success-stories of the Union, as proven by the downward trends in the rates and the introduction of better services". The area has grown but the results" cannot be enough at a time in which the competitiveness of Europe is at stake". So, Reading adds: "This is why the reform of the telecommunication laws, that will be introduced this year, will have to focus on those critical bottlenecks in which competition is not effective yet". We must therefore "pave the way to pan-European scale economies, in the interest of operators and consumers alike". (continued)
