BENEDICT XVI: COMECE CONGRESS; THE EU SHOULD NOT "COMPROMISE ON BASIC HUMAN VALUES" (4)

"Then, when secularist and relativist trends and currents are grafted on such pragmatism – warned Benedict XVI –, one ends up denying to Christians the right of taking part, as such, in the public debate, or at least their contribution is disqualified". According to the Pontiff, nowadays "the European Union, to be the effective guarantor of the constitutional state and the effectual promoter of universal values, cannot help clearly recognising the certain existence of a stable and permanent human nature, which is the source of rights that are shared by all individuals, including those who deny them". "In such context – highlighted the Pope –, the right to conscientious objection must be protected whenever the fundamental human values are breached". Hence the final exhortation to the participants in the audience: "Be proactively present in the public debate on a European scale" and "support such commitment with an effective cultural action". "You know – concluded Benedict XVI – that you are responsible for helping build, with God’s help, a new Europe, realistic but not cynical, rich in ideals and free of naïve delusions, inspired by the perennial and life-giving truth of the Gospel".
