THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; MAMBERTI (HOLY SEE), "CHRISTIANS HAVE A LOT OT SAY"

The energy issue, the fall in the birth rate, support to the family, protection of human life, as well the extension of the EU. These are the challenges that ,according to mgr. Dominique Mamberti, secretary for the relations with the States of the Holy See, are on the European agenda and on which Christians have a lot to say. Taking part in the European Congress of Comece, under way in Rome, the Vatican Foreign Minister recalled that the EU needs to "put in place an effective energy policy", enlightened by the notions of "common good and the principle of solidarity" and taking inspiration from "non discrimination in the access to resources, investments and concessions". According to Mamberti, "if the material needs were in tune with the ethical requirements that are associated with them, Europe would join forces in its commitment to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, and in doing this it would also boost peace in the world and the protection of the environment". To promote the wellbeing of the underdeveloped countries, "investments in research and innovation should be boosted". However, "the unacceptable results of a type of research that does not have the human being at the centre of its goals cannot be denied". His reference to the VII Framework Program that indirectly promotes the destruction of embryos is clear. Vis-à-vis such issues, the Catholics working in the public sphere should be aware that the future of Europe is at stake here". (to be continued)
