"The building of Europe must be based, first and foremost, on an ethical view of life and society. Every legal community is founded on a community of values. With the European Union, the grounds and goals of these values that are rooted in the Christian tradition is the respect of human dignity". This was stated by Marcelino Oreja, ex MEP, who spoke this morning in Rome at the congress promoted by Comece, "Values and prospects for the Europe of tomorrow. The 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome" (until 25th March). As he submitted to the floor the Report of the Committee of the Sages, of which he is the president, "A Europe of values. The ethical dimension of the European Union", Oreja highlighted that the rejection of war, the "reunion of peoples" and the "pursuit of a common good" have been the "first goals" of the founders of Europe. Nowadays, "through the establishment of a big market and a single currency, the European Community" has become an "economic and monetary power" and has gained "considerable weight in the diplomatic and military spheres".
