THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; MGR. VAN LUYN, "MAN ALSO HAS A SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSION"

Adrianus van Luyn, president of Comece, when opening the congress, "Values and prospects for the Europe of tomorrow. The 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome", promoted by Comece in Rome from today to Sunday. According to mgr. Van Luyn, it was "important, as well as to create the common market, to walk along the ethical path". "But now Europe is going through a bad patch – he highlighted –, and it is natural to ask ourselves, as Christians, what contribution can we make", bearing in mind that "the EU has a spiritual and cultural identity" and it would be essential to overcome the national selfishness and take inspiration from those universal common values. According to mgr. Van Luyn, there are three dangers in the debate on values: "Forgetting the source of values that is the Church, neglecting solidarity, and giving in to complacency". Then, the bishop lingered on the subject of the Christian roots, the reference to which is not "an offence for the other religions, because saying nothing means ruling Christianity out". "The fathers of Europe were aware of the Christian heritage – he concluded –, and the Church is responsible for expressing its opinion, which cannot be tantamount to political interference".” “
