THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; MGR. BAGNASCO (PRESIDENT OF CEI), THE EU SHOULD OVERCOME "ITS ORIGINAL ECONOMIC BENT AND OPEN UP TO A BROADER HORIZON"

” “"The unification process, kick-started with long-sightedness and courage by the founding fathers, that has gone through times of uncertainty and difficulty along with surges of strong enthusiasm, is now urging us to take on new responsibilities and to renew our common commitment". It was recalled this morning in Rome by mgr. Angelo Bagnasco, archbishop of Genoa and president of the Italian Bishops Conference, as he opened the European Congress of Comece on "Values and prospects for the Europe of tomorrow", on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. "Europe – he added – is called to overcome its original economic bent and open up to a broader horizon, including the political and institutional ones. From this point of view, while the problems of the institutional governance of the extension and preservation of the welfare state certainly become relevant, the search for shared values on the plane of a cultural and spiritual unity, fuelled by dialogue and by the respect of identities, seems to be equally essential".
