THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF EUROPE: COMECE CONGRESS; GIORGIO NAPOLITANO, THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE CHURCH "TO THE REVIVAL OF THE EU"

"These celebrations can provide an important impulse and make a contribution to the revival of the European integration process. And to such end it is essential to reassert, with commitment and passion, the reasons for the unity between the peoples and carry out the institutional reforms that will be needed to put in place more and more effective common policies that may be able to respond to the expectations of our citizens": this was written by the president of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, in a message for the congress, "Values and prospects for the Europe of tomorrow", promoted in Rome by Comece from today to 25th March for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaties of Rome(25 March 1957). As he sent to the organisers of the congress his "warmest congratulations for the praiseworthy initiative", president Napolitano commented that "the Church and the religious associations – whose status and contribution to dialogue with the European institutions have been officially recognised in the Constitutional Treaty – are called to join forces to revive the European Union, as witnesses of the deepest values that are the foundations of a the building of a united Europe".
