HOLY SEE: NOTIFICATION OF "WRONG OR DANGEROUS PROPOSITIONS" IN THE WRITINGS OF FATHER SOBRINO (3)

” “If Jesus "were a believer like us", as stated by father Sobrino, "He could not be the real revealer, He who shows us the face of the Father": this is one of the basic objections contained in the Notification, which highlights that, in the reflection of the Jesuit father, "the unique character of the mediation and revelation of Jesus is missing, and He is reduced to the status of a revealer, as could be attributed to any prophet or mystic". Instead, specifies the Holy See, "it is precisely the intimacy and direct familiarity that He has with the Father that enable Him to reveal to the men the mystery of God’s love". In addition, some of Sobrino’s statements "would suggest that Jesus did not give His death a salvific value", but just the value of an "example to motivate others": in this way, objects the Holy See, "the Redemption is reduced to moralising". "The statements about the effectiveness of Christ’s redemption and salvation– reads the Notification – cannot be reduced to the good example He gave. The mystery of the Incarnation, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God made flesh, is the only and inexhaustible source of the redemption of mankind, which is made effective within the Church through the Sacraments".” “
