Hans-Gert Poettering, president of the EU Parliament, explains why he suggested that this subject should be included in the agenda of Euromed, due to take place in Tunis on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th March (created in 2003, the assembly gathers the MEPs, the ministers sent by the national Parliaments of the EU states and those of Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey). Another item on the agenda will be women’s rights in Europe and in the Mediterranean countries. Then a next extraordinary meeting will be proposed, to be hosted by Egypt in June, to review the situation of the Middle East and the potential contribution of the Assembly in this respect.
