COUNCIL OF EUROPE. POETTERING (PARLIAMENT): "AN AGREEMENT ON ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND CONSTITUTION IS NECESSARY" (2)

” “On meeting journalists alongside the summit going on in Brussels, the president of the European Parliament, Poettering, explained that he did not ask for "religious reference, neither in the Declaration of Berlin" of next 25 March, "nor in the Constitution", since he was the leader "representing the whole Parliament", which did not entrust him with such task. However, Poettering himself added: "Anyway, I feel like recommending further meditation on the will to launch this Constitution, and on whether we consider it adequate or not that the Constitution reflects the roots of Europe itself", which "are multiple" and connected with culture, history as well as the religions of Europe. Going back to the energy question, Poettering confirmed what he said in front of the leaders of the 27 countries: "The Parliament is in favour of a compulsory unilateral reduction of gases generating greenhouse effect by 30% within 2020", by the countries in the European Union. "The Parliament also encourages the adoption of a binding objective on a European level, which, in the same period, may secure the covering of 25% of our needs, through renewable energies". The works of the summit are resuming in the morning with the aim of drawing up the final document of the Council, which should close early in the afternoon. ” “
