“Mixed marriages are one of the most pressing problems in the pastoral in Bulgaria, and the hottest issue is the choice of a faith in which to raise one’s children": it was said to SIR by the president of the Bulgarian Bishops Conference, mgr. Hriszto Projkov, during the meeting of the Bishops Conferences of south-eastern Europe, which took place in the last few days in Oradea, Romania. In his report, the president of Ccee (Council of European Bishops Conferences), card. Peter Erdo, had explained what inter-ritual marriages mean under the canon law, i.e. marriages between a Catholic and a member of a different Christian confession, or between a Catholic and a Muslim or an atheist. In south-eastern European countries, where Catholics are often a minority, marrying a Catholic is very difficult. "There is a difference between the stance of the Catholic Church and that of the Orthodox Church, which does not accept mixed marriages states mgr. Proikov -. In the Catholic Church, one can be dispensed by the local bishop, on condition one’s children are raised in the Catholic religion. That is the cause of many problems, because, even if at the beginning they say yes, then they do not like to raise their children in a different faith".
