SIR EUROPA: CoE, MORE SPACE TO THE NGOs IN THE STRENGTHENING OF DEMOCRACY

On the initiative of the Council of Europe (CoE), about 160 delegates from Non-Governmental Organisations will meet in Kiev (Ukraine) from 25th to 27th November: the goal is to outline the role of their organisations in the development and strengthening of democracy. This second regional conference, according to the CoE, will offer the participants coming from Belarus, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the neighbouring countries a platform for a debate about strengthening cooperation and outlining recommendations for social work in their regions. These conferences are part of a pilot project, launched on the occasion of the 2005 Warsaw summit by the NGOs conference of the Council of Europe. For the moment, such Conference gathers 395 organisations that have a participatory status within the Council. The goal of the project is to bring the NGOs together in regional congresses in order to find answers to the problems of civil participation in the development and strengthening of democracy.
