BENEDICT XVI: ANGELUS, SOLIDARITY WITH THE VICTIMS OF THE CYCLONE IN BANGLADESH AND STOP TO ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES

"In the last few days, a horrible cyclone hit the south of Bangladesh, causing a huge number of casualties and serious destruction. In renewing the expression of my deeply-felt condolences to the families and to the whole nation, which is so dear to me, I appeal to international solidarity, that has already been put in motion to face immediate needs". These are the words uttered by Benedict XVI, after saying the Angelus, yesterday morning from Saint Peter’s Square. "I encourage you to make all kinds of efforts – he added – to rescue these brothers that have been hit so hard". Then the Pope recalled that yesterday was the opening day, "in Jordan, of the 8th Assembly of the States that have signed the Convention on the Ban on the use, storage, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and on the destruction of such mines. The Holy See is one of the main promoters of such Convention which was adopted ten years ago". "Therefore I express my heart-felt wish and encouragement to the success of the Conference – he went on –, so that these devices, which keep killed people, including many children, may be completely banned".
