AFRICA-EUROPE: IN MOLDAVIA, CAMPAIGN BY THE CHURCH AGAINST THE TRADE OF HUMANS

(from our correspondent) – A thorough information campaign against the trade of women and children all over Moldavia, on TV and in the press, in the schools and in places of socialisation, in police offices and on public transport. It is one of the campaigns carried out by the Moldavian Church through a work-group established in 2001 by the bishop of Chisinau, mgr. Anton Cosa. He spoke about it this morning during the workshop organised by Ccee (European Bishops Conferences) and Secam (Symposium of Bishops Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) in Cape Coast, the Ghana, until November 18th. As well as information, explained mgr. Cosa, "we have taken care of training some operators, partly through experiences made along the streets of Italy and a cooperation network of European Catholic organisations". In addition, "we began intensive dialogue with street children and with that working class that usually dos not read the papers, has no TV at home and therefore is cut out of basic information". Despite the success of the campaign, he specified, "we soon realised that informing was not enough, unless we also addressed the immediate problem of poverty through support and solidarity measures". Hence the training of young people, local development schemes, as well as bringing home hundreds of victims of the trade.
