SIR EUROPE: A SURVEY ON THE IMAGE OF CHRISTIANITY IN FRANCE BY "LA CROIX"

The majority of the French believe that, in the current society, the Christians "are sufficiently visible", but just 4 French out of 10 declare to personally know one person or a neighbour who is "practising" or "busy" in Church life. It is one of the data emerging from a survey carried out by IFOP on request by a Catholic daily, "La Croix", about "The future of Christianity". The survey, carried out by the research company from October 31st to November 2nd, was published yesterday by the French daily. Poverty fight and peace actions in the world are the two most important missions which the French assign to Churches for the 21st century. The first proposal was the favourite one for the youngest (65% – less than 35 years old). The second one was chosen by the oldest (56% – over 65 years old). On the other hand, one critic was made almost by everybody: 70% of the French believe that "the Christians and their churches don’t know how to communicate and address young generations". This figure becomes nearly 75% with the young under 35. This opinion is also shared by 64% of practising Catholics. Finally, the majority of the French (62%) declare to accept the hypothesis according to which "all religions are equal". It is also the opinion of the majority of practising Catholics (63%).
