SIR EUROPA: COMECE, A EUROPEAN STRATEGY FOR THE FAMILY (4)

"The EU has jurisdiction over indirect taxation", goes on Comece, which proposes a reduction in VAT rates for "basic child-care products". To ward off the risks they are exposed to, "the most brutal videogames must be effectively banned" through "specific legal measures", and "parents must be helped watch over the way their children use mobile phones and the Internet". But children’s wellbeing is also related to food: "within the EU, one child out of four is overweight", states the document, which highlights the "centrality of the parental role in structuring children’s dietary behaviours". A role that is also essential "to prevent alcohol and drugs abuse by teenagers". In addition, Comece invites the European Commission to provide for better "support to people with children suffering from mental conditions (2 million in Europe)" or disabled children, and finally it hopes measures will be taken to ease immigrant family reunions, "to be regarded as a key challenge for social inclusion". Attached to the document is a EU-wide overview of the current state of family law (divorce, alimony, property regimes, hereditary succession, etc.). Info: www.comece.org
