BENEDICT XVI: ANGELUS, APPEALS FOR TURKEY, KURDISTAN AND MIGRATION

"The news of the last few days about what happened in the border region between Turkey and Iraq are a source of concern for me and for everyone". It was said yesterday morning at the end of the Angelus, in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome, by Pope Benedict XVI, who exhorted everyone to make "every possible effort to achieve a peaceful solution to the problems that have recently come to the fore between Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan". "I cannot forget – added the Pope – that in that region many populations have found shelter to escape the insecurity and terrorism that have troubled the life of Iraq over the last few years. It is just in the interest of those populations, that also include many Christians, that I fervently wish all the parties will work hard to promote peacemaking solutions". "In addition, I hope the relations between migrant populations and local populations – he went on – will take place in the spirit of that high moral ground that is the fruit of the spiritual and cultural values of every people and country. Those who are in charge of security and migration should use appropriate means to protect the rights and duties that are the foundations of every true cohabitation and encounter of peoples".
