“Social media: at the crossroads between self-promotion and service. Looking for the Truth to share it", this is the subject chosen by Pope Benedict XVI for the 42nd World Day of Social Communication, that will be celebrated on 4th May 2008. It was announced by a release from the Papal Council of Social Communication. "The subject chosen by the Holy Father", states the archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, president of such ministry, invites one "to reflect on the role of the media, with special reference to the increasing risk that they may become self-referencing and no longer or not only tools at the service of the truth. A truth that must be looked for and shared”. The World Day of Social Communication, the only world day planned by the Second Vatican Council (“Inter Mirifica”, 1963), is celebrated in many countries, on the advice of the bishops of the world, the Sunday before Pentecost (in 2008, May 4th). The Holy Father’s Message for the World Day of Social Communication is traditionally published for the day of Saint Francis of Sales, the patron saint of journalists (24 January).
