This morning, Benedict XVI granted an audience to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland, Geir H. Haarde. The news was given by the Newsroom of the Holy See, which stated: "During their friendly conversation, the parties acknowledged the mutual respect and esteem that mark the relations between the State of Iceland and the Catholic Church, and the latter’s contribution to society, especially in the educational and social spheres. In addition, they addressed international issues of common interest, highlighting the need for the international community to do more to promote peace, fight poverty and protect the environment". After the audience with the Pope, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland, goes on the Newsroom, met cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, secretary of State, and mgr. Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with the States.
