SIR EUROPE: EP, COMPULSORY "MADE IN" FOR PRODUCTS IMPORTED INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION

The European Parliament asks for introducing the mark "made in" on many products coming from over community borders, "in the interest of consumers, industry and competitiveness within the European Union". In fact, in Strasbourg – where the plenary session of the Assembly is closing today – such declaration was signed by the majority of MEPs. Therefore, it may become the official position of the parliament. Through such declaration, MEPs invite "member States to immediately adopt the regulation proposal meant to introduce the compulsory indication of the country of origin for some products imported into the European Union". The intention is to give "clarification the highest importance, in the interest of consumers". In this respect, it is essential to inform citizens on the origin of a given consumer product. This is also meant to oppose proliferation of "misleading and fraudulent indications about the origin of goods" in the markets of the Union, "potentially compromising safety" of the people. During the presentation of the declaration, in Strasbourg, it was confirmed several times that such initiatives are already taking place within the most important trade partners of community Europe, starting from the United States and Japan.
