SIR EUROPA: THE 2008 COMMISSION PROGRAM GIVES PRIORITY TO GROWTH, MIGRATION AND THE ROLE OF CITIZENS

” “"Growth and employment, the management of migration, the assignment of a central role to the citizens, and the place of Europe as a global partner": these are some of the "priority issues" that José Manuel Barroso, president of the EU Commission, highlights out of the 2008 work plan of his team. The Executive adopted the guidelines for next year, in which it "undertakes to implement key policies in the areas of the globalisation agenda", which had also been discussed by a session of the recent Lisbon summit. Barroso explains: "This document is our political plan for 2008. It outlines our strategic initiatives and takes its cues from our commitment to giving the European citizens an added value. Along with ratifying the reform treaty, the EU Commission will show to the citizens some tangible results, proving that Europe is more important than ever in the age of globalisation". The document consists of 38 pages, with initiatives, schedules and timelines, plans for cooperation with the other EU institutions and the member states, and partnerships with third countries. The contents include the management of mobility for work purposes, about which the Executive submitted a specific initiative yesterday.” “
