SIDNEY 2008: THE SCHEDULE OF THE VIGIL WITH THE POPE

"Helping the pilgrims live the subject of the WYD 2008 – "You will have strength from the Holy Spirit, and you will be my witnesses" – using music, images, experiences and the reading of the Scriptures". The content of the vigil of Saturday 19th July 2008 with Benedict XVI was described with these words by father Peter Williams, director of the liturgical office of the World Youth Day of Sidney 2008. "The pilgrims – he explains – will walk as far as Randwick, the venue of the vigil, where they will sleep outdoors. Here, shows will be organised to entertain them until the Pope arrives. The liturgy will be focussed on a time of prayer with playful, lively parts to make it more dynamic and energetic. After Benedict XVI’s departure, the vigil will go on until dawn with the prayer of adoration in special tents set up in the racetrack". "Randwick – concludes father Williams – will be the new cenacle where the pilgrims will be guided by the Holy Spirit. We will give the young the example of the patron saints of the WYD. By looking on them, the young may become witnesses as far as the farthest boundaries of the earth".
