BENEDICT XVI: GENERAL AUDIENCE, THE CONSISTORY ON 24TH NOVEMBER (3)” ” ” “” “

"In addition, I wish to raise to the cardinal’s ranks three venerable bishops and two well-deserving priests who are particularly praiseworthy for the way they have served the Church". With these words, the Pope announced the five more (non voting) cardinals in addition to the 18 new voting cardinals who will enrich the College of Cardinals (and the future conclaves) from 24th November, the date of Benedict XVI’s second Consistory, which has been announced "live" today to the congregation – as it had happened for the first one, also during the general audience – by the Holy Father. Here are their names: H. B. Emmanuel III Delly, patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeians: mgr. Giovanni Coppa, apostolic nuncio; mgr. Estanislao Esteban Karlic, emeritus archbishop of Paranà (Argentina), father Urbano Navarrete, ex rector of the Papal Gregorian University; father Umberto Betti, ex rector of the Papal Lateran University. "Among the latter ones – revealed the Pope –, I had wished to raise to the cardinal’s ranks also the old bishop Ignacy Jez of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg, Poland, a well-deserving bishop, who has suddenly passed away yesterday. We pray for the repose of his soul".
