HOLY SEE: OCTOBER 17TH, MGR. MARTIN AT ECOSOC FOR THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE "POPULORUM PROGRESSIO"

On Wednesday 17th October, in New York, the Permanent Observatory of the Holy See to the UN and the "Path to Peace" Foundation will promote a side event called "Development, the new name of peace" on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Paul VI’s encyclical "Populorum progressio" about peoples’ development. The initiative will be hosted by Ecosoc, from 01.15 pm to 02.45 pm. The key address will be given by mgr. Diarmuid Martin, archbishop of Dublin and former permanent observer of the Holy See to Geneva; the chairman will be Oscar de Rojas, director of the Financial Department for Development of the Economic and Social Affairs Department. Paul VI’s encyclical – reads a note from the Holy See – "identifies peoples as the subjects of their own development, encourages everyone to make great efforts to free themselves from the hardships of hunger and poverty, and asks for more value to be attached to the quality of the human person". The 17th October event, goes on the note, "will locate the key social, economic and legal issues, will discuss these ideas through the lens of the encyclical, and will promote a forum for an exchange of experiences between the countries", as well as between the floor and the speakers.
